The Miss Utility MD/DC Damage Prevention Committee holds the annual Dig Smart Awards as part of its quest to promote underground utility safety and recognize contractors who steadily work toward damage prevention.

The Process


If your company goes above and beyond to ensure damages are prevented, apply for the Dig Smart Awards by completing the online entry form, available starting in July. NOTE: The entry period for the 2020-2021 Dig Smart Awards has closed. Winners will be announced in September and recognized at the 2021 Greater Chesapeake Damage Prevention Training Conference in October.

Nominated companies are evaluated based on their damage prevention procedures, employee training programs, enforcement of damage prevention laws, and participation in public/government forums, damage prevention meetings and conferences, and trade organizations.

Winning companies will receive two complimentary two-night packages to the next Greater Chesapeake Damage Prevention Training Conference (GCDPTC), where they will be recognized by their peers as leaders in damage prevention.


Dig Smart Award Winners

This year, the committee reviewed entries from some of the safest contractors in Maryland and Washington, D.C. These outstanding organizations were chosen from a group of excellent nominations from contractors across Maryland and the District of Columbia. The winners were determined after a review of each company’s damage prevention practices by a select panel of industry experts.

NPL-logo Anchor Construction Corporation receives this year’s Dig Smart Excellence Award. Anchor is recognized as a leading multi-disciplined infrastructure construction contractor with ongoing projects throughout the Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore areas. People who have partnered with Anchor have resulted in innovative, cost-effective and quality construction, exceeding their expectations for over 30 years. Anchor’s team of dedicated professionals has an unwavering commitment to integrity, safety and quality. Anchor is “grounded in excellence.” Anchor also received the Dig Smart Award for Washington, D.C., for 2011-2012, 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019.

Gaines and Company Gaines and Company receives this year’s Dig Smart Award for Maryland. Founded in 1954 and a Top 600 Specialty Contractor, Gaines and Company is a turnkey site development company that specializes in underground utilities, grading and excavating, sediment and erosion controls, road work such as paving and sidewalks, and storm water management. Its clients include homebuilders and developers; general contractors; underground utility contractors; state, federal and municipal authorities; and military installations in Maryland, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Delaware. Gaines and Company was the Dig Smart Honorable Mention recipient for 2017-2018 and received the Dig Smart Award for Maryland for 2018-2019.

Anchor Construction Corporation Flippo Construction Company, Inc. is the recipient of this year’s Dig Smart Award for Washington, D.C. Flippo is an employee-owned general and heavy construction business operating primarily in the Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and Baltimore areas. The company was founded in 1971 by B. Earl Flippo and has grown from a small utility contractor to one of the major players in the area’s heavy construction industry. Flippo’s operational services consist of heavy construction, including bridges, concrete structures, roadway and site work. Flippo provides utility installation, repairs, and long-term service/maintenance contracts for the major utility providers in the Washington Metropolitan area. Flippo also received the Dig Smart Award for Washington, D.C., in 2003.
