Dig Smart Award

The Miss Utility MD/DC Damage Prevention Committee holds the annual Dig Smart Awards as part of its quest to promote underground utility safety and recognize contractors who steadily work toward damage prevention.


The Process

Nomination

If your company goes above and beyond to ensure damages are prevented, apply for the Dig Smart Awards by completing the online entry form, available starting in July.

Nominated companies are evaluated based on their damage prevention procedures, employee training programs, enforcement of damage prevention laws, and participation in public/government forums, damage prevention meetings and conferences, and trade organizations.


The Winners

Awards Ceremony

Winning companies will receive two complimentary two-night packages to the next Greater Chesapeake Damage Prevention Training Conference (GCDPTC), where they will be recognized by their peers as leaders in damage prevention.

Dig Smart Award Winners

This year, the committee reviewed entries from some of the safest contractors in Maryland and Washington, D.C. These outstanding organizations were chosen from a group of excellent nominations from contractors across Maryland and the District of Columbia. The winners were determined after a review of each company’s damage prevention practices by a select panel of industry experts.

Image of Gray & Son, Inc. winning their 2022 Dig Safe Award Gray & Son, Inc., receives this year’s Dig Smart Excellence Award. Founded in 1908, Gray & Son is a leading contractor in Maryland for both private and public construction projects. Uniquely qualified to manage the entire construction project for their customers, Gray & Son has the resources to provide many types of construction site work and restoration projects. Gray & Son also won the Dig Smart Award for Maryland for 2011-2012, 2013-2014 and 2015-2016, as well as an Honorable Mention for 2012-2013.

Comer Construction is a women-owned, Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) providing commercial and residential construction services throughout northeastern Maryland for more than 30 years. Comer Construction is committed to providing safe, quality services, while serving the ongoing needs of its community. Comer Construction also received the Dig Smart Award for Maryland for 2014-2015 and 2016-2017.

Established in 2009, C.W. & Sons specializes in the installation of underground infrastructure supporting utility companies, public and government agencies, and private companies. Building on the foundations of its experienced and professional employees, C.W. & Sons has become a recognized industry leader capable of delivering exceptional quality safely and efficiently. This is C.W. & Sons’ first recognition in the Dig Smart Awards.

Since its founding in 2008, Baltimore Tree Trust has been on a mission to equitably increase and preserve the city’s tree canopy so that all Baltimoreans can share the benefits of a healthy living environment. To date, Baltimore Tree Trust’s volunteers and operations team have planted and maintained more than 15,000 trees, mostly in underserved areas of Baltimore. This is Baltimore Tree Trust’s first recognition in the Dig Smart Awards.
