Miss Utility Awards

Maryland and DC's 2005 Locator Achievement Awards

In 2004, Miss Utility started a fantastic initiative to recognize one of the most integral (and oftentimes overlooked) components of damage prevention - the locator.

Miss Utility is proud to announce the winners of its 4th Annual Locator Achievement Awards, which were held on April 20 at the Columbia Sheraton in Howard County.

The 2005 Locator Achievement Awards are determined through voting by excavators, with whom it is crucial all locators have a solid working relationship.

This year’s winners and their respective coverage areas, are:

  • Herman Wilson of Glen Burnie, Md., UtiliQuest (“Locator of the Year” for all of Miss Utility’s coverage area and regional winner for Anne Arundel & Howard Counties)
  • Wayne Sargent of Havre de Grace, Md., UtiliQuest (Harford & Cecil Counties and the 2004 Locator of the Year)
  • Mark Thomas of Upper Marlboro, Md., UtiliQuest (Washington, D.C.)
  • Frank Bachman of Glen Burnie, Md., UtiliQuest (Montgomery & Prince George’s Counties)
  • Pat Anderson of Newburg, Md., Charles County Utilities (Calvert, Charles & St. Mary’s Counties)
  • Erik White of Williamsport, Md., UtiliQuest (Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett & Washington Counties)
  • Brian Merritt of Middle River, Md., OCC Locating Services (Baltimore City & Baltimore County and a repeat winner)

Locator Achievement Awards regional winners received framed certificates and Miss Utility-embroidered golf pullover jackets; repeat regional winners received $50 cash prizes to further promote the importance of constant commitment to damage prevention. Of the 2005 Locator Achievement Award Regional Winners, both Herman Wilson and Wayne Sargent, the 2004 Locator of the Year, are repeat regional winners. The Grand Prize for the Locator of the Year (Herman Wilson) was $500 in cash, a Miss Utility-embroidered heavyweight work jacket, and a Miss Utility “Silver Hard Hat” award.

Earl Lewis, Jr., Assistant Secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation providing the keynote address. Mr. Lewis also has nearly two decades of experience at BGE, and damage prevention continues to be a top priority for him as he works in state government. Mr. Lewis lauded all attendees for their roles as unsung heroes in keeping our technology-driven area safe from outages.

The Locator Achievement Awards were established by the Miss Utility Maryland/D.C. Damage Prevention Committee to recognize locators who have zero at-fault damages and who have exemplified outstanding safety practices.
