2011-2012 DIG SMART and LOCATOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

DIG SMART AWARD

The Miss Utility Damage Prevention Committee holds the annual Dig Smart Awards as part of its quest to promote underground utility safety and recognize those who steadily work toward damage prevention. This year the committee reviewed entries from some of the safest contractors in Maryland and Washington, D.C., making it a challenge just to pick two winners.

The 2011-2012 Dig Smart winners are Gray & Son, Inc. for Maryland and Anchor Construction Corporation for Washington, D.C. These two outstanding organizations were chosen from a group of excellent nominations from contractors across Maryland and the District of Columbia. The two winners were determined after a review of each company’s damage prevention practices by a select panel of industry experts. Both companies are first-time Dig Smart Awards winners.

Gray & Son, Inc. located in Timonium, Md., is a leading contractor in the Baltimore metropolitan area for both private and public construction projects. The company specializes in asphalt paving, land excavating, utilities, concrete, soil stabilization, sediment control, storm water management and commercial snow removal.

Headquartered in the District of Columbia, Anchor Construction Corporation is a bonded, licensed, insured, certified minority contractor serving Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. Anchor Construction Corporation specializes in road construction and utilities including water, storm, sewer and conduits. The company also has the capability and expertise to rehab existing infrastructure and build new construction.

NPL Construction, a three-time Dig Smart Award winner, receives this year’s Dig Smart Excellence Award. This award recognizes companies that have been awarded the Dig Smart Award on three different occasions in the past and are maintaining the highest level of safety standards. NPL provides a full-service menu of high-quality, safe, reliable, best-cost solutions with integrity and stability to meet the challenges of energy distribution companies.

Pleasants Construction is the recipient of the Dig Smart Honorable Mention Award. Pleasants Construction, based in Clarksburg, Md., in Montgomery County, has been providing superior site development solutions to the greater Washington Metropolitan area for more than four decades. Its services include clearing, demolition, earthwork, site utilities, erosion control, stormwater management, soil cement modification, and paving. Pleasants Construction received the Dig Smart Honorable Mention as a result of its exceptional work in damage prevention this year.

Congratulations to the four companies recognized this year and thank you to all organizations who submitted nominations.

2012 LOCATOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Miss Utility and District One Call are proud to announce the winners of the 10th Annual Locator Achievement Awards. For the past ten years, these awards have honored the outstanding individuals who go above and beyond to ensure the underground infrastructure of Maryland and Washington, D.C. remains damage free.

This year, Gov. Martin O'Malley has once again proclaimed April as National Safe Digging Month, which serves as an important reminder that underground damage prevention is a critical safety concern. The locators recognized by the Locator Achievement Awards do their best to keep the public safe through their contributions to damage prevention by locating accurately and performing at the highest levels of safety in all elements of their profession.

The Miss Utility Maryland/D.C. Damage Prevention Committee established the Locator Achievement Awards program to recognize locators who have zero at-fault damages and exemplify outstanding safety practices for an entire calendar year. The criteria for individuals to be eligible for the Locator Achievement Awards include:

  • Locator must have ZERO "at fault" damages for the period of 1/1/2012 through 12/31/2012.
  • Locator must have ZERO safety violations within his/her respective organization.
  • Locator must establish proactive working relationships in damage prevention.

Forty locators from around the region were recognized this year at a Bowie Baysox game at Prince George's Stadium on Friday, May 10. Fred Hoover from the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) was the guest speaker during the ceremony. Mr. Hoover has more than 30 years of experience working with utilities and critical infrastructure and currently serves as the Clean Energy Program Director at the MEA.
