Contractors and Locators Honored for Commitment to Safe Digging
Miss Utility presents Maryland and Washington, D.C. excavators and utility locating technicians with 2010 Locator Achievement Awards and Dig Smart Awards
DIG SMART AWARDS
The Miss Utility Damage Prevention Committee holds the annual Dig Smart Awards as part of its quest to promote underground utility safety and recognize those who steadily work toward damage prevention. This year the committee reviewed 17 entries from some of the safest contractors in Maryland and Washington, D.C.
We are pleased to announce that for the first time ever, a company has won for both Maryland and D.C. in the same year. Long Fence has been chosen as the 2010 Dig Smart Award Winner for both regions due to their exemplified performance against the entry form criteria. LOCATOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
Miss Utility is proud to announce the winners of its annual Locator Achievement Awards. These awards honor the crucial people who have gone above and beyond to ensure the underground infrastructure of Maryland and Washington, D.C., remains damage free.
"Throughout 2010, all of our winners demonstrated exceptional utility locating practices and have taken a leadership role within the damage prevention community, said Wayne Gilmer, Maryland/D.C. Damage Prevention Committee Chairman.
"We congratulate these locators who devote their career to ensure a safe working environment for their colleagues, as well as Maryland and Washington, D.C., residents."
The Miss Utility Maryland/D.C. Damage Prevention Committee established the program to recognize locators who have zero at-fault damages and exemplify outstanding safety practices. Winners of the 2010 Locator Achievement Awards were nominated by their respective supervisors for being damage-free in 2010. All of the 2010 winners received certificates, personalized jackets and T-shirts courtesy of the Miss Utility Maryland/D.C. Damage Prevention Committee.
Awards were presented at a dinner banquet at Prince Georges Stadium in Bowie, Md. on May 20, prior to a Bowie Baysox minor league baseball game. Locators were recognized before a crowd of 3,800 people during the middle of the first inning. The recognized locators stood atop the first base dugout as a public address announcement was made describing the awards program.
Two locators stood out at this year's event, Allen Billman and Herman Wilson, for being continued leaders in the locating community. Allen Billman won his sixth consecutive Locator Achievement Award and Herman Wilson was awarded his seventh award in eight years.
Also at this year's awards, Miss Utility was presented Gov. Martin O'Malley's proclamation identifying April 2011 as Maryland Safe Digging Month. In an effort to promote safe digging practices, the proclamation reminds citizens to contact Miss Utility before starting any outdoor digging project to prevent damages to underground facilities and property.
