Minutes of Maryland/DC Damage Prevention Meeting
August 23, 2011

I. Call To Order and Introduction

Wayne Gilmer (Utiliquest) called the regular monthly meeting to order at 9:35 am.

Customary introductions were made.

The Minutes of July 26, 2011 were approved as written.

II. Safety Item

Wayne Gilmer’s monthly safety topic covered safe lifting.

III. MGH Update

Nick Kelly (MGH) gave a brief update on the following advertising updates:

  • Bowie Baysox Diamond Dig Event was rescheduled for September 3rd at Prince Georges Stadium. This allows for an additional (2) weeks of promotion. It was promoted on DC101 with one lucky winner to walk away with $500.00 in cash and a $1,000.00 travel voucher.
  • Miss Utility/SMECO hosted an 811 night with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, MD on August 11th
  • Matt RMatt Ruddo (Miss Utility) and Tony Gersitz (Miss Utility of Delmarva) attended the MACO (Maryland Association of Counties) convention in Ocean City, MD August 18th and 19th.
  • Production on the new Miss Utility video should be completed and will be shown at the September meeting

IV. Dig Smart/Locator Achievement Awards (LAA) Committee

Dora Parks (Miss Utility) gave the following Dig Smart/LAA update:

  • Dig Smart Awards
    • Fifteen Dig Smart entries were received
    • The qualifying contractors will be forwarded to the owner-members for review on August 23rd.
    • Winners will be recognized at the Greater Chesapeake Damage Prevention Training Conference
    • Winners will receive (2) free two night conference packages

V. Damage Prevention Presentations/Safety Event

Wayne Gilmer gave a brief update on the following presentations/events:

  • Monumental Paving and Excavating held on August 18th, attended by 18 employees
  • 811 Day Promotion
    • Area event opened to the community
    • UtiliQuest provided a locate demonstration
    • 200 ‘811’ t-shirts given away
    • Hot Dog meter registered 500
    • A great 811 cake, topped with construction equipment and milk dud rocks
  • Miss Utility call center 811 Day Promotion
    • All employees sported an ‘811’ t-shirt
    • 811 grab bag give-a-way
    • 811 cake
    • Pot luck luncheon enjoyed by all (even Wayne)

VII. 2011 Greater Chesapeake Damage Prevention Training Conference

Nick Kelly (MGH) gave a brief update on the following conference updates:

  • Conference will be held November 2-4, 2011 at the Clarion Resort Fontainebleau Hotel in Ocean City, MD Registration is open
  • Post cards were printed and available for distribution
  • 811 motorcycle designed and built by Paul Jr. Designs from the TV show American Chopper will be unveiled at the conference
  • Early bird registration closes on September 2.
  • High end brochures are now available for distribution.
  • Current registration is at 200 attendees.
  • Multiple email blasts are scheduled to go out in September and October.

VIII. Maryland Underground Damage Prevention Authority

Kevin Woolbright - Vice Chairman gave the following update:

  • Work on finalizing the various forms and documents for the Authority website
  • An official seal has been created
  • Members are working on a filing fee schedule for submitting complaints to the Authority
  • Damage Prevention training will be offered in lieu of a fine for a first time offense

X.One Maryland: Inter County Broadband Network (OMBN)

Andre Robinson (OMBN) gave the following update:

  • Contracts were awarded to the following contractors: S&N Communications, KCI, Southern Maryland Cable and Henkels & McCoy
  • Locates will be per the industry standard, 1000 – 1500’ and consideration given to 500’ increments in “urban” areas with heavily congested utilities

Please visit www.missutility.net/damageprevention for the monthly MD/DC Damage Prevention meeting dates which are held the 4th Tuesday of every month excluding December. Coffee and donuts will be served at 9:00 am; meetings begin at 9:30 am.

The next Maryland/DC Subscribers meeting will be October 11, 2011 at the Garrett County Visitor's Center in McHenry at 10:00am. Coffee and donuts will be served at 9:30am.
