Minutes of Maryland/DC Damage Prevention Meeting
February 22, 2011
Miss Utility Call Center
Hanover, MD  21076

I. Call To Order and Introduction

Wayne Gilmer (Utiliquest) called the regular monthly meeting to order at 9:35 am.

Introductions were made.

The Minutes of January 25, 2011 were approved as written.

II. Safety Item

Wayne Gilmer’s monthly safety topic covered whirlpool spas.

III. MGH Update

Nick Kelly (MGH) gave a brief update on the following:

  • Frederick Keys Reading Program
    • Bookmarks are in the schools now
    • Volunteers are needed to staff a table during the Keys Reading Program nights

  • 6’ x 3’ Miss Utility Banners
    • Banners will be delivered to the Call Center before the spring dig season
    • MD/DC Subscribers will be asked to hang them at offices/buildings that are in high traffic areas

  • Damage Prevention Guide and Marking Guidelines Handbook are schedule to be printed and delivered to the Call Center around the first week of April

  • Miss Utility Video- currently working on developing the script and screen shots

There was a general discussion about reaching out to fire departments during April to promote 811 and national safe digging month. Nick stated that fire companies that promote 811 on signs in front of their firehouse will be in a drawing to win a donation for their department. Kevin Woolbright (WSSC) stated that he chairs the Fire Department Coordination Committee for Prince Georges & Montgomery County and he would see if they would be willing to allow Nick to attend their next meeting to promote the initiative.

IV. Dig Smart/Locator Achievement Awards (LAA) Committee

Nick Kelly gave the following Dig Smart/LAA update:

  • 34 winners have been selected for the 2010 LAA
  • LAA event will be held at the Bowie Baysox stadium on Friday May 20th
  • Locators and their families are invited to the event
  • Locators will be recognized on the baseball field before the game
  • Dig Smart entry forms will be sent at the end of April
  • Dig Smart Awards will become part of the GCDPTC in Ocean City, MD
  • The winners will receive 2 GCDPTC registration packages and will have an opportunity to speak during one of the conference sessions

V. Damage Prevention Presentations

Wayne Gilmer gave a brief update on the following presentations:

  • January 31st - Charles County Government DPW in La Plata, MD
  • February 9th - Montgomery County- Office of Cable & Communication Services in Rockville, MD
  • February 14th - Montgomery County Public Schools in Silver Spring, MD
  • February 17th – Montgomery County Public Schools in Bethesda, MD

Wayne stated that tomorrow’s presentation for Montgomery County Public Schools in Clarksburg, MD had to be rescheduled. The presentation in Rockville, MD is still on for March 4th.

VI. Trade Shows:

Nick Kelly stated that all shifts are filled for the spring and summer shows. He said there will be opportunities for folks to sign up to work Miss Utility events at the Bowie Baysox and Frederick Keys stadiums this spring and summer. He also said that volunteers will be given a box of promo items to hand out during the first few innings of the games and a Miss Utility table skirt to drape on a table which provided by the Baysox and Keys.

VII. 2011 Greater Chesapeake Damage Prevention Training Conference

Matt Ruddo gave a brief update:

  • Conference will be held November 2-4, 2011 at the Clarion Resort Fontainebleau Hotel in Ocean City, MD
  • Conference content and session speaker outreach has begun
  • 2009/2010 attendees will have an opportunity to register during the month of April
  • Registration to the general public will begin on May 1, 2011
  • The Maryland Underground Facilities Damage Prevention Authority will conduct a town hall style meeting on the Friday of the conference
  • Conference will follow a similar format to the ones held in 2009 & 2010

VIII.MD/DC Subscribers Committee Meeting

Tom Baldwin stated that he would be stepping aside as the MD/DC Subscribers Chairman. He said it was time to give others an opportunity. Scott Brown (Washington Gas) was nominated as the Chairman and Vince Healy (Verizon) as the Vice-Chairman at the last Subscribers meeting. Tom said that Wayne Gilmer will continue as Chairman of the MD/DC Damage Prevention Committee and Kevin Woolbright was selected as the Vice Chairman which is a newly formed position.

Tom Baldwin indicated that the Subscriber positions would become official at the March 29, 2011 meeting.

Everyone thanked Tom for all the hard work he put into the MD/DC Subscribers Committee over the course of the past several years.

IX. FTTP

There was a general discussion about not seeing trench footage projections the last couple of meetings. Tom Baldwin stated that he would follow up with Vince Healy and Charles Brown of Verizon to check the status of receiving the projections.

Open Discussion

Jeff Walters (Utiliquest) asked if there were plans to create a smart phone application for processing tickets since 80% of volume is on ITIC now. Dora Parks (Miss Utility) stated they are currently working on an application with Rutgers University at the New Jersey One Call Center. She said it is in beta-test mode right now and she didn?t have any further information to provide at this time.

Glenn Goin (A.A. County DPW) asked when the MD/DC Excavator Guides would be ready with the new Miss Utility Law updates. Nick Kelly stated that the guides should be available by the first week of April.

Upcoming Meetings

Please visit http://www.missutility.net/damageprevention for the monthly MD/DC Damage Prevention meeting dates which are held the 4th Tuesday of every month excluding December. Coffee and donuts will be served at 9:00 am; meetings begin at 9:30 am.

The next Maryland/DC Subscribers meeting will be March 29, 2011 at the Miss Utility Center at 9:00 am. Coffee and donuts will be served at 8:30 am.

There There being no further business brought before the committee, the meeting was adjourned at 10:20 am.
