The 2009 Greater Chesapeake Damage Prevention Training Conference was held Oct. 21-23, in Ocean City, Md., at the Clarion Resort Fontainebleau
Hotel. The first-ever industry conference for the region, presented by Miss Utility of Delmarva, Miss Utility of Maryland, District One Call and more
than a dozen additional sponsors, brought together 320 participants with the shared focus of working together to prevent underground utility damages.
Participants at the three-day conference had the opportunity to attend industry training sessions and visit more than 30 different exhibitors. The
training sessions focused on best practices for effective underground utility damage prevention, as well as a discussion on potential law changes
in Maryland and Delaware. The following seven training sessions were offered at this year’s conference:
- The Anatomy of a Damage Investigation.
- One-Call Law Change Roundtable Discussion for Maryland and Delaware.
- Trench Safety.
- Excavating Safely Near Water and Sewer Laterals.
- Excavating Safely Near Gas and Hazardous Material Utility Lines.
- Focus on Fiber Optics.
- Miss Utility/District One Call Center Services That Save Time and Money.

In addition to the training sessions offered, the conference included two keynote speakers – Jeff Wiese, Associate Administrator for Pipeline and Hazardous
Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), and Khrysanne Kerr, Director of Program Development for Common Ground Alliance (CGA).
Mr. Wiese spoke to attendees about PHMSA’s key objectives in damage prevention, including its role as a strategic partner with regional groups, and Ms. Kerr
discussed national damage trends featured in the most recent DIRT Report, as well as ways CGA is working with stakeholders to share common damage
prevention messages.
“This year’s conference would not have been possible without the hard work of our planning committee and support of our sponsors, exhibitors and
attendees,” said Matt Ruddo, Chairman of the 2009 Greater Damage Prevention Training Conference Planning. “The number of attendees at this year’s
conference more than doubled the original goal set forth last year. This is a strong indicator of the cooperative damage prevention community we all
have built in the Delaware/Maryland/Washington, D.C. region.”
